Florida Research Fellowship

frfI have been awarded the Florida Researcher Fellowship from UWF to seed fund my project Turbidity Paintings. I am very excited! The submersible ROVs are on order!

Solar Singers Return

I was awarded a Scholarly and Creative Activities seed grant of $2000 to support the production of up to 300 autonomous units that I talked about in my research in a post from 2010.We will be able to produce a wide number and range of these units which would are stable enough to withstand normal climate changes. I want to install the work in outdoor locations for extended periods of time.  The grant is going to really help with the costs of this project; I am most excited about hiring research assistants from my advanced students.

I wasn’t sure why I wanted to install these in the natural setting until I had a few more experiences living with the work. I was living amongst a limited number (ten or so) of the autonomous singers and I began to notice some interesting phenomena.

The song from ten of these units was really complex. It shifts through alignment and interference of the signals and create a complex set of rhythms. An electronic musician was visiting the studio one night and we had a very interesting discussion about the how work exhibits the basics of emergence theory . My second observation is that throughout the day the chirps emitted change as the angle of the sun/shade, clouds, etc. would move by. This emergent chorus shifts with the environment; the changes create a soundscape that is directly tracking the movement of time and really resonated on physical level. It is an ecosystem of input and response emerging. It is very strange and wondrous, you can feel this deeply and intuitively.

Third Faction Institute

Quietly and in the background, the Third Factioneers, have been making arrangements to launch a research initiative. The current show PeaceCraft is the first project to be done under this new structure. Third Faction Institute is research collective organized as a corporate entity. The partners are artists, theorists, educators and technologists that I have worked with many times before. This corporation will provide platforms and opportunities in the future to raise money and visibility. The Third Faction Institutes’s primary goal is to directly support Third Faction’s and art or research by others of synthetic worlds and gaming by providing residencies, symposia and platforms for production.

Lecture: Art as an Exo-Discipline

I gave a talk last week for the Experience UWF Downtown Lecture Series titled Art as an Exo-Discipline. It was an tremendous honor, thanks to Dr. Ford and everyone who contributed to the opportunity. I tried to unravel the methods of the interdisciplinary work I do. I attempted to discuss philosophy, the crises in working as a trans-disciplinarian, and then got to share several works.

A short interview I did with the radio station:  http://wuwf.org/post/uwf-professor-sees-art-exo-discipline

Otto’s Ghost

Otto’s Ghost is the name for the installation of the autonomous sound units that I have written many posts about. I along with a group of 6 research assistants fabricated 300 of the beasts over the summer for a October 30th debut at the Art in Odd Places 2013 in Greensboro NC. The AiOP is a long running project from artist/director Ed Woodham and this version was in coordination with SECAC 2013. Many thanks to funding source that helped us get there: UWF Scholarly and Creative Activities Grant, UWF SGA Travel Grant, and the kind support of the UWF Department of Art.

The song from ten of these units was really complex. It shifts through alignment and interference of the signals and create a complex set of rhythms. A friend introduced me to renowned psychologist and musician, Dr. Michael DeMaria at a studio one evening; we had a very interesting discussion about the how work exhibits the basics of emergence theory . Graphene

this is a databent audio interpretation of electrons jumping around the shared valences of atoms. inspiration came from the video of the 2D crystalline structure of graphite, aka Graphene, from UCB labs. that video is at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1qWmrp6GAs the video data was reinterpreted as an audio file to create an ambient track.

9june2012

we are not as much a city as we are a region and the weather is dramatic here. in June 2012 we experienced a severe weather event, between 9 and 12 inches of rain fell in only a few hours. i pulled the radar image composite for the period around this event and used it as a Raw file to start the databend.
